New Aje

New Aje is a trio consisting of Ava Lim on the Alto Saxophone, Jai Lasker on the Guitar, and EJ Brannan on the Drums. All three members are alumni of music programs within the greater Seattle area and are upcoming sophomores in the University of Washington improvised music program. In spite of the pandemic, New Aje was able to play together under the instruction of Cuong Vu – though they played entirely through virtual platforms. The members of New Aje honed their musical skills through the exploration of free music; though they were physically separated, they were able to learn invaluable lessons about listening, musical clarity, and communal improvisation as if they were together. With the widespread availability of vaccinations, the group had the opportunity to play in person and apply the skills they learned over the past year to both free improvised music and the standard repertoire of improvisatory Black American music. While the group has had relatively few opportunities to perform due to COVID-19, New Aje is looking forward to expanding the possibilities of their collective voice and finding platforms to display their growth.

SEPAC Juneteenth Kick-Off: New Leaders, New Table

Snohomish Ebony PAC Juneteenth Kick-Off: New Leaders, New Table - *Virtual Event

https://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJwvduiprj0rGdOlW5sjfySoosmCBvozvi22

https://www.facebook.com/Snoebonypac/

Juneteenth is a yearly celebration hallmarking freedom of slaves in Texas, several years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. The legacy of Juneteenth is symbolic as it also opened the door for the long struggle of African Americans to be respected as equals in society. Now in 2021, 156 years after the first Juneteenth, we see more African American leaders stepping up to help shape our world. Join SEPAC for our first Juneteenth Kick-Off virtual event, "New Leaders, New Table".

There will be a presentation about how Snohomish County's first African American-centered political action committee, SEPAC, owes its existence to the legacy of Juneteenth and the African American community leaders that started it. You will hear from SEPAC's leadership Dr. Janice Greene and Ben Young and SEPAC's 2021 Endorsed Candidates Demi Chatters, Alicia Crank, Brandy Donaghy, Clarence Shaw, and Louis Harris. You will also hear from SEPAC's 2020 endorsed candidates and elected representatives of the 44th Legislative District, April Berg and John Lovick!

This Juneteenth Kick-Off is part of a county-wide month-long Juneteenth celebration in collaboration with other organizations hosting Juneteenth events. SEPAC and all of the candidates welcome donations from the public to ensure that African American candidates continue to get the support they need to make a difference in Snohomish County. Donations can be made directly to SEPAC at www.snoebonypac.com/donate or each candidate's websites listed below:

Welcome to Juneteenth Festival of Freedom 2021

Welcome to Juneteenth Festival of Freedom 2021

Juneteenth celebration in local Snohomish County communities will be a festival of rich virtual and in-person activities commencing June 12 through June 25, a Juneteenth Committee of Community Organizations announced today.

“We hope this will be an emerging tradition for our neighborhoods and communities throughout our county,” said Donnie Griffin, a committee member and founder of the Lift Every Voice Legacy (LEVL) inEdmonds.

Juneteenth marks the official end of slavery in the Confederacy some two-and half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, according to the to the National Museum of African American History and Culture. However, not all Black people were immediately free in Texas, as the state was still under Confederate control at the time of the signing. On June 19, 1865 (Juneteenth), about 2,000 Union troops marched into Texas, officially liberating all Black people from slavery.

Some of the festivities include: Black History in Snohomish County on June 14, sponsored by The Black Heritage Committee; New Leaders, New Table on June 15, sponsored by Snohomish County's first African American-centered political action committee, SEPAC; Black Panel Discussion on June 18, sponsored by the NAACP; Juneteenth History Storytelling by Eva Abrams on June 19, sponsored by LEVL and live-stream Church Sermon by the Jubilee Church of God in Christ on Sunday, June 20.

“Although the Snohomish County NAACP and other community organizations have been celebrating Juneteenth in local areas for some time now, we have come together as a Juneteenth Committee to weave all of our activities and festivities in a single mosaic of colorful celebrations throughout the county. This is particularly significant since June 19 has become an official, paid holiday for all state employees in Washington beginning 2022,” Griffin added.

The committee participants include DanVonique Reed, Snohomish County Black Heritage Committee (Everett); Louis Harris, NAACP of Snohomish County (Everett/Mukilteo); Jacque Julien, Communities of Color Coalition, (Edmonds/Everett); Donnie Griffin, LEVL (Edmonds); Courtney Wooten, Suburbia Rising (Edmonds) and Project Director Arwen Valdez.

Community Transit is the Committee’s Foundation Builder sponsor for Juneteenth/Snohomish County 2021.
